MEXICO WELCOMED 7.2% MORE FOREIGN VISITORS

The Ministry of Tourism (SECTUR) reported that, according to figures from the Bank of Mexico, the inflow of foreign tourists from January to May totalled 13 million, up 7.2% compared to 12.1 million during the same period in 2014.

In a release it was noted that, according to the Banxico report, visitor arrivals by air, the main foreign tourism segment, increased by 9.1%, from 6.0 to 6.6 million between January and May 2015, compared to the same period in 2014, and foreign exchange revenues in the first five months of the year amounted to $7.713 billion.

SECTUR stated that the flow of cross-border tourism saw an increase of 4.5%, moving from 5.3 million visitors during the period January to May 2014 to 5.5 million over the same months this year.

For cruise ship arrivals, from January to May this niche recorded 8.1% growth, moving from 2.7 million in 2014 to 2.9 million this year.

With regard to the average spending of visitors arriving by air, a report of the Central Institute revealed that this amounted to $949.6, a figure that is 1.2% higher than the $938.1 averaged between January and May 2014.

This increase caused average foreign tourist spending to go upwards, with a percentage change of 1.4%, having moved from $871.1 between January and May of 2014 to $883.2 over the same period in 2015.

As for average foreign visitor spending, the Bank of Mexico said that this saw an increase of 3.5%, from $512.7 in the first five months of 2014 to $530.9 between January and May 2015.
